SACRAMENTO, CA — The Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) thanks Governor Gavin Newsom for his continued dedication to California’s community college students in the 2026 - 27 January budget proposal, including support for student access, success, and equity across California’s 116 community colleges.

The Governor’s proposal includes resources to stabilize core college operations and strengthen student supports, which aligns with SSCCC’s mission: to enrich the collegiate experience for all California community college students by pursuing policies that improve student access and success, while engaging and empowering local student leaders and honoring equity and diversity.

“This budget proposal includes important investments that help students stay enrolled, meet basic needs, and complete their educational goals,” said Jerry Reyes, President of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. “As the process continues, we look forward to working with the Governor and Legislature to ensure students, especially those facing the greatest barriers, have the support they need to succeed.”

As the budget process continues toward the May Revision and final enactment, SSCCC will elevate student perspectives and advocate for investments that:

  • Keep college affordable and accessible, including support services that reduce barriers to attendance.
  • Advance student success and completion, including strategies that accelerate pathways to certificates, degrees, transfer, and careers.
  • Honor equity and diversity, ensuring resources reach students most impacted by financial insecurity and systemic barriers.

The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation, comprising 73 districts and 116 colleges, serving 1.8 million students annually.  The Student Senate for California Community Colleges mission is to enrich the collegiate experience for all California community college students by pursuing policies that will improve student access and success while engaging and empowering local student leaders and honoring equity and diversity.
