2021 General Assembly
The Student Senate for Community Colleges has completed its 25th General Assembly. Even in this virtual environment, more than 450 student leaders and advisors registered for the event. The event kicked off on Friday with a welcome by Chancellor Ortiz Oakley who acknowledged that this was the largest general assembly of the SSCCC even in a pandemic. He congratulated the leaders of the SSCCC for their work and encouraged students to continue engaging in advocacy on behalf of the 2.1 million students. On this first day, a Native American student from American River College acknowledged the land we occupy, three students received the first annual student leadership award from the California Community College Board of Governors, the Senior Policy Advisor for Higher Education for Governor Gavin Newsom Dr. Lande Ajose presented on the “Recovery with Equity: A Roadmap for Higher Education after the Pandemic,” the delegates nominated students for the 2021 – 22 Board Officer positions, and event participants enjoyed six workshops on a variety of subjects.
The second day was just as successful! The President of the Board of Governors Pamela Haynes welcomed the student leaders with encouraging words for them to continue their journey, the current SSCCC Board Officers presented the State of the Senate, the delegates approved reorganizing several regions, the resolution debate and voting began, and participants enjoyed 15 workshops on a variety of subjects.
On the final day of the general assembly, the delegates voted for the 2021 – 22 Board Officers and concluded voting on resolutions. The draft minutes can be viewed here and the Final Resolution results can be viewed here.
